The Red Door has been operating in the same space for number years. I have seen the red door and the beautiful street art on the side of the wall but never visited until now. I’m not sure why.

A strong recommendation from a colleague prompted my first visit. She went on a week day evening and loved the food. She likened it to tapas and it is a kind of Yum Char that you order from the menu.

She took a bunch of cards while she was there and distributed them around the office. We joked that she was getting commission but she said it was that she enjoyed the atmosphere and the food she wanted us to know about it.
The atmosphere is something else – I haven’t experienced it before. Take a look at these photos.

One of the things I like about Yum Char is seeing the dishes pass-by giving a visual view before you decide to sample. For this to really work you need to go to a large busy Chinese restaurant where they cater for a large number of people. Then you get variety and freshly cooked dishes. A smaller place doesn’t give you the same variety and I think that often dishes go round and round for a couple of hours.

The Red Door is a smaller place. A strange place when you walk in. It is full of Chinese antiques. It is wonderful. Rather like eating in a relaxed antique shop.

We went for Saturday lunch and we chose to eat at a table in the window. If we weren’t addicted to people gazing while we talk we would have had a different experience of being swallowed into a different world by choosing a table in the interior. Well try that next time.

You can see the Red Door Menu here

We chose Prawn and Crab Dumplings, Vegetarian Jiao Zi, Duck Bean Curd Wrap, Northern Chive & Prawn Dumplings.

Vegetarian Jiao Zi

Prawn & Crab Dumplings

For desert we had Red bean and Custard sweet buns.

These Red Bean sweet buns were delicious.

In fact all the food was good and I thanked my colleague for the recommendation that took us to the Red Door. We will be back.

I lunched recently with friends at Lau’s Family Kitchen.

Outside Lau’s Family Kitchen, Acland Street

For me the restaurant has lost its edge. The service was amazing and the staff very knowledgeable and helpful but the place looks tired. The wall opposite where I sat was covered in black scuff marks – rather like the inside of a wardrobe. I wondered how they got there – no one throws shoes at the wall and these marks show above the couch which won’t have caused the marks – interesting. There is another wall that is quite beautiful that is covered in a large wall hanging of Asian fabrics.

This is not your cheap Asian cafe that you find in Richmond. This is classy dining and I believe a view of scuffs marks is unacceptable. I wanted to get up and paint them out.

I remember a visit for dinner not long after it opened. The food was expensive but special. This wasn’t the case at lunch. The food is still on the pricey side but not out of the ordinary.

One of the entree specials was a New Zealand whitebait omelette. My eyes lit up and I started with this. It is sometime since I had New Zealand whitebait. I was disappointment but I think this could have been my expectations. The whitebait resided in a rather thick egg mixture. Whitebait are delicate; you could almost say tasteless creatures. They need to be lightly bound together so their flavour can dominate. I think the word omelette should have warned me so probably this dish did represent the description on the menu.

After the whitebait entree things began to look up.

Yu Heung

Yu Heung, a special on the menu, is described as a tradition Szechuan dish of braised eggplant and minced pork with a touch of spice, served with steamed rice. This was pronounced to be delicious by those who ordered it.

Steamed seasonal vegetables

The seared beef with steamed seasonal vegetables was thought to be just right by my companion who is very limited in what she can eat.

Singapore noodles

My Singapore noodles were good; dry with some noodles crispy. I like that. At $24.00 they could have had added a few more prawns and barbecued Pork.

We didn’t have dessert. All in all it was a pleasant lunch with good food but not brilliant food.

I believe the lunch menu is different from the dinner one. If you wish to eat here dinner could be more interesting. Most of the reviews -check some here – are for dinner. I hope someone gets busy with a paint brush. The toilet door could do with a couple of coats of paint, too.

The smell of food cooking leads you to the Suzuki Night Market. The smell is delicious with the main ingredient being the aroma of barbecuing. This is strange because when you get into the market there is an incredible selection foods – a chance to eat your way around the world with food from many countries.

This market is held every Wednesday until 2nd of March on the Queen Victoria Market site. It has been operating on this site for a number of years and has built up a strong following.

In the unusual weather we are having this summer the evening I went was the first sunny Wednesday for a few weeks. Not that rain really matters because most of the stalls are under cover. The market opens at 5.30pm and this is the scene at 5.45pm with the crowd flowing in. In the fine weather this is where the entertainment is.

There are a numerous stalls but with the stomach-rumbling smells that meet you on Elizabeth Street most people head to the food section. There are two food areas both on the right of the walkways. This gives you some an idea of the fare on offer.

The Johnston Collection in Melbourne is secret. Well, not really. Although I heard about it only recently and was surprised no one had mentioned it to me before. It is worth mentioning because the Johnston Collection is unique.

Because of its location in suburban Melbourne the address is a sort of secret. This is so tour parties can collect at a Melbourne hotel and be transported to the house, where the collection is on show, in a bus that belongs to the Johnston Collection. It seems the local residents don’t want people coming and going. It is that sort of street.

Sadly no photographs are allowed. This is because of the insurance cover. However photos can be seen on the Johnston Collection web site

William Johnston’s house is among elegant town houses like these.

This collection is the work of one man, William Johnston. It is made up of antiques, curios and quirky pieces that represent the various passions of this astute and charming man who loved beautiful things and collected them. William Johnstone died in 1986 and left his collection, and his houses to the Victoria State Government.

The collection is huge with a large part of it being stored in a warehouse near Government House.

The current exhibition has been arranged by the fashion designer Akira Isogawa and is called ‘Akira Isogawa Meets Mr Johnston’.

Isogawa had the run of the house and the warehouse to make the choices he wanted to use to give the house his touch and style, and to create his own ambiance in the rooms. This gives some of the rooms an Asian flavour. However the curator has to work with the wall colours, the window drapes and the floor coverings.

The wall colours are Victorian so besides the Asian influence there is a touch of Victoriana in every room.

The mood for the tour is set as you arrive through the charming formal garden and into a graceful reception room. You are offered tea or coffee in delicate English tea cups and a piece of home made shortbread.

William Johnston’s life is discussed and his passion for collecting revealed. His passion began when his grandmother gave him a delicate Minton tea cup that he fell in love with. This cup is on display on a bedside table in this exhibition.

The streets in this part of Melbourne are wide with central nature strips.

If you do get to view the collection make sure you see the courtyard garden. It is lovely.

I am going to keep the faith and keep the address a secret. It is such a pleasure to be allowed to view these beautiful things that I would hate to spoil it by upsetting any of the locals.

A wet cold lunch time in Brunswick and where do you eat? I’m sure there are hundreds of places but we happened to be more or less outside the Vietnamese cafe, Green Field Asia Restaurant.

If you want ambiance and decor then the Green Field Asia Restaurant is not for you. This lack of atmosphere makes the first impression a bit bleak on an overcast, raining and chilly day in Melbourne.

There were a number of people inside who had escaped the rain and this gave the rather cavernous space a happy buzz. Our table near the front and the window was cleared of detritus from the previous occupants and we sat down to study the menu. The menu is much like any other Vietnamese eating place – Vietnamese with touches of other areas of Asia.

We ordered:-

-

Vegetarian Spring Rolls

Tofu, vegetables and Mongolian sauce.

Chicken Curry

Honey Chicken – this dish was superb.

What makes this cafe/restaurant a standout is the freshness of the ingredients, their claim on the menu that they don’t use MSG and the price for the quality of the food.

The food can take sometime to arrive at your table. After a bit of a wait we realized this was because there was a great trade in take-away and our order was in the queue. If you want take-away my suggestion is to ring first and order. I also wonder if you planned to eat in and know the menu whether it is worth ringing and placing an order.

It is a good place for lunch if you are in the area or work near with most dishes priced at about $7.50 including rice. The spring rolls were 5.00

They have Pad Thai on the menu. One of my favourites. I’ll try that next time and I am told that the salt and pepper squid is good.

The Oriental Tea House is something different.

The Oriental Tea house in Chapel Street was once a pub

Yum Cha on Sunday is something I enjoy – watching the trolleys come past, studying the food and deciding ‘yes’ or ‘no’. The frustrating part is that when I have eaten enough I see something new appear from the kitchen, glide past me and I am temped all over again.

At the Oriental Tea House there is none of this. You order your Yum Cha from the menu. It is rather like a ‘Chinese Tapas’.

You can pop in at any time during the day order a tea and a Yum Cha snack.

I ate at the Oriental Tea House on Chapel Street for the first time before we attended a gold class session of ‘Sex and the City 2’ at the Jam Factory.

We went early to give us time to talk, relax and to get into the mood for the glamour and style we were to see on the screen. It was a good choice.

The good thing about the Oriental Tea House is that it severs the same food all the time so we could create our own stylish early dinner.

The name ‘ The Oriental Tea House’ appeals to me. Just the sound is relaxing. The clean white open space when you enter, with the store of interesting teas and other merchandise including Chinese herbs in the front and then the restaurant at the rear, is welcoming and soothing.

I like the emphasis on tea but as we were preparing to watch over-the-top glamour on the screen we decided bubbles were appropriate.

This is what we ordered:-

Won Ton Soup

Delux Basket (nine different pieces of dumplings steamed in a large basket).

Calamari in Spicy Salt

The dishes appeared haphazardly with the squid coming a distant last. It occurs to me now that each dish may travel from the kitchen as soon as it is cooked – something to think about when you order. If you order soup it is nice to both get your soup at the same time.

The dumplings are delicious. The best I have had recently. As I write this I am still thinking about them and plan to pop in for one of their teas and a ‘variety basket’ of dumplings. At $6.90 it is excellent value

We didn’t try the Tea-Tails – cocktails made with tea blends. The idea of a tea based cocktail served in a teapot is a whimsy that brings a smile to the face – it has to be worth a try.
Here is an example of some that are available:-

Campari Treasure 8.5
Bitter sweet with a hint of orange Campari.
+ Calm & Concentration TEA served on ice

Russian Spy in Shanghai 8.5
This one really packs a punch with Vodka
+ Gun Powder TEA served with fresh lime

Baileys Kiss 8.5
Spicy with a tasty kick of Baileys & milk
+ Chai TEA served over ice

Luck of the Irish 8.5
One to really help you unwind with a warm blend of Irish Whisky
+ Relaxing TEA

Saigon means Vietnam, to most of us, yet Cafe Saigon 159 – 161 Victoria Avenue, Albert Park serves a variety dishes from a number of Asian countries. I’m not sure if this is an advantage or not.

The people with me have been to Cafe Saigon several times and knew exactly what they were going to eat. I was new to the cafe and I expected Vietnamese.

I have seen the restaurant many times before. I used to work not far away and I have admired the building – all that bluestone makes for an attractive facade. It was nice to get a chance to eat there.

Walk through the entrance and there is a small shrine to Buddha that creates an immediate ease to the day’s tensions.

On your left is the bar and to your right the large dining room. It has a decor that is cool and minimal with bricks and concrete. It represents no particular style and somehow this makes it easy to feel comfortable and at home.

As I said I was surprised to find the menu covered dishes from other Asian countries including Grilled Teriyaki Chicken and Pad Thai Rice Noodles.

We ordered a serving of Vietnamese spring rolls and also Vietnamese vegetarian rice paper rolls.

Spring rolls

Vegetarian rice paper roll

Of the two dishes the rice paper rolls were far the superior and had a sauce that owed a lot to Hoi Sin Sauce. The waiter told us that the sauces were all made on the premises.

Two of us travelled south from Vietnam and ordered Singapore noodles. Good choice. The dish had just the right amount of heat for me and I got the other diner’s serving of prawns.

Singapore noodles with extra prawns

The sizzling beef and vegetables was a tried and true favourite for my other table companion. She suggested the restaurant so she could eat this dish. It came to the table really sizzling and smelling delicious.

Sizzling beef and vegetables

The service was wonderful, friendly, efficient and careful. That sounds a silly word to use but we felt we were cared for and our pleasure was their priority.

The restaurant has been there for a long time and appears to have built up a following with the locals.

The food was good but not exceptional and the prices on the high side for Asian food but then we are in Albert Park just up from the beach so it is unfair to compare prices with prices in Victoria Street, Richmond.

I’d eat there again. It’s a Melbourne Place that is worth going to.

There is a take away menu here. I can’t see that it is very different from the cafe Menu.

Recently, I scrolled through some of the blogs I follow and read a review of the Dae Jang Geum Korean BBQ. We decided to try the restaurant.
When I mentioned at work that I would be lunching at a Korean Restaurant everyone said,

“What’s Korean food like?”

It is a good question. We know so much about other Asian cuisines but what do we know of Korean? We eat regularly Thai, Chinese, Indian and Japanese. We grab them as take-aways, we read about them on the food pages of magazines and newspapers. But Korean food? When did you last discuss Korean food with a mate?

The Dae Jang Geum Korean Barbecue restaurant is a great place to get acquainted with the cuisine.

Dae Jang Geum Korean BBQ is upstairs in Little Bourke Street, just around the corner from Swanston Street. You can’t miss it. There are large garish pictures of some of the dishes severed on either side of the wide entrance stair case.

As we know so little about Korean food I think this is a good idea. It shows us what we can expect to eat before we climb the stairs. The menu also has a picture of each dish. I found all these pictures helpful.

I have been to Korea and I had a couple of dishes in my mind that I remembered I liked and haven’t eaten since. I also remember the blistering heat of ‘kimchi’ that was added to everything, including soups.

Upstairs

The room is large and feels like any Asian cafe that is about the food and conversation not the decor. One feature wall is interesting. It is covered in Korean writing. When you look at it closely you can see how it differs from Chinese or Japanese. We wondered what it was saying. Dae Jang Geum over and over again??

We ordered a glass of white wine to sip while we made food decisions. White wine is the only wine by the glass and it is what it says, white wine. For $4.00 you get a full glass of drinkable dry white. I have photographed it because I wanted to prove the value!

The tables are set up for a tradition Korean BBQ, with a gas ring in the centre.

We ordered a plate of dumplings to share

They came with mild flavoured dipping sauce and the spring onions that gave them a fresh taste. We enjoyed them.

The seafood noodle soup with a couple of side dishes was very good. It was large and had plenty of seafood.

I ordered a seafood pancake. I remember eating these rather starchy pancakes when I was in Korea. They were often pleasant and mild without too much heat in the mixture. This one came with two side dishes neither very hot but added to the overall flavour.

Side dishes are part of the Korean cuisine and each order came with its own side dishes.

We plan to return for an evening meal and to have the traditional barbecue. We want the fun of our own gas ring and the chance to cook our own food Another dish we want to try is a soup that is served in a stone bowl with a raw egg on top that you mix in and it sort of cooks with the hot soup.

I am puzzled about the lack of chilli in the food. No one discussed heat with us. We were the only westerners in the restaurant that lunch time and I wondered if the cooks made a decision on our behalf and cut the heat or have we struck a regional fare of Korea that is not hot?

Another question that was asked at my office is why Korean food hasn’t taken off like other Asian foods? I have no answer to that question. Perhaps you have.

The yet to be named baby elephant is a Star. Crowds are surging through the gates of the Melbourne Zoo daily and queuing to get a glimpse of this miniature elephant. Yes that is what she looks like a tiny miniature of the grown-ups.

I couldn’t resist the urge to get my first look at a baby elephant and it was an amazing experience.

We arrived a little after 11.00 am for the 11.00 to 12.00 viewing and spent time in the queue. This gave us a chance to absorb that ambience of the plantings around the Elephant Enclosure.

These are Thai elephants and they live in a Thai-like atmosphere surrounded by stands of bamboo and Thai artifacts. Notices are written in Thai and entrance ways to the enclosure are carved and painted as if we were in Thailand.

The line snaked its way through shady stands of bamboo – it is worth going for the bamboo – beautiful.

Before I got there I was wondering why we were planning to give this young lady a Thai name. Why not an Australian name? She was born here. She is our elephant.

Four names have been selected for the public to choose from. They are:-
Leelawadee (which means frangipani),
Mali (jasmine),
Ma Li Wan (climbing jasmine),
Su Ma Li (osmanthus)
Iyares (which means both elephant and orchid and is pronounced Ai ya

The names are not only in keeping with her Thai heritage but also family lineage – her relatives have names of Thai flowers.

I did see the point of the names and I voted for Jasmine but I still think we could have added an Australian flower to the lineage – Wattle for example.

She was born on the 16th of Jan making her about 6 weeks old now and growing fast. She appears to be oblivious of her fame and enjoys herself in her enclosure with her mother and her aunt.

If she feels shy she can hide behind the bulk of these as she did when our group entered. But in a minute she ambled out and began to toss some hay about. It was a short but somehow a remarkable and memorable experience. All young have charm and she is particularly charming and cute. She put her trunk up like a ‘real’ elephant and it was a joy to see.

At the moment there are two viewing times 11.00am and 2.30pm. The queues begin to form about 15 minutes before viewing begins. If you think ahead you will bring a picnic and eat it at the elephant enclosure where there are seats and shade. That way you will be in the front of the queue and get your four minutes of staring and camera-clicking time without too much wait. This will give you more time to see the rest of the Melbourne Zoo.

Zoo opening times:-
Daily 9.00 to 5.00pm

Viewings:-
Weekdays 11.00 am to Noon – 2.30 to 3.30
Weekends – 10.30 to Noon – 2.30 to 3.30

Getting There:-
Tram – No 55 runs from West Coburg through William Street the city to the Domain Interchange and stops at the Zoo

Train- Upfield Line from Flinders Street to the Melbourne Zoo Station

The Minh Phat Supermarket in Richmond makes a lie of the saying “one supermarket is much like the next”. The isles here are not full of familiar brands,or things we have seen a hundred times before. Minh Phat Supermarket, in Nicholson Street just off Victoria Street, Richmond is different – very different.

I’d been shopping and enjoying the vibes of Victoria Street for some time before I found it. That sounds silly because now I know where it is, I can’t understand how I missed it. But I did. There’s an empty lot next door so perhaps that helps to hide it from view.

Visiting Minh Phat is fun and stimulating. There are things like dried and preserved Persimmon, jars of Korean Kim Chi and lotus seeds, fried and preserved parsnip. There is a whole isle of teas. Packets of teas and teas you can buy by the scoop – dried flowers, tiny rose buds and chrysanthemum.

Fresh vegetables too. Everything you would expect in a green grocery section and then there are things you wouldn’t expect – bunches of Chives in flower and garlic shoots.

It is impossible to know what some of the things are as there is not a word of English on the packaging. It is a bit like a game of chance. Try to work out what it is, buy it and find out if you were right when you get it home.

You can buy cooking utensils and crockery.

I have experimented, successfully, with a Thai Dessert – rather like an instant pudding but more delicious and everything is written in English – Thai Tapioca Pearl and Black Bean in Coconut Milk. Classy and the flavours grow on you and you need to go back for more.

Minh Phat Supermarket, 178 -180 Victoria Street, or alternatively 2 – 8 Nicholson Street, Richmond. It is just around the corner from Victoria Street, next to a vacant lot.

Getting there:

The 109 Tram from Port Melbourne goes along Collins Street – through the CBD and then along Victoria Street in Richmond.
The 78 Tram runs the full length of Chapel Street from St Kilda East, through Prahran into Church Street and terminates at the corner of Church Street and Victoria Street, Richmond. This is a great tram if you live along the route.

There’s one hour meter parking in Victoria Street.
