Mordialloc is a place I usually drive through on my way to somewhere else. This time I stopped. I was with a friend who had an appointment nearby that brought us to lunch time.
We were lucky. We found Main Street Cafe.

I didn’t expect to find anything with a Brunswick or Chapel Street vibe at the outer edge of our city. Main Street Cafe has a funky, cosmopolitan feel. We wandered in and were swept up by a waiter who showed us to a seat in the window where we could watch the passing people. We could have sat outside where it is protected from the elements by heavy plastic drop sheets. The day was chilly and windy and even with that protection we were drawn to the slightly fuggy warmth inside.
The place was full but the noise level was manageable and we were able to talk.

The menu is interesting and varied. I had bean soup one of the daily specials. It came in large pottery bowl and was thick and hearty – ideal for the wintery day. My friend had the Hills Hamburger. I’d go for that next time. McDonald’s is the only other place I know that has dill pickles as part of their filling. I believe that hamburgers are best with dill pickles. I miss them if they are not there. It came with crispy moreish chips.

The place was doing a good trade for lunchtime. There were mums, babies and grandparents as well as a smattering of business people. The staff was helpful and friendly and the food came in an acceptable time. It’s worth a try if you are in the area.

Shibuki Fashions Mordialloc
On the way back to the car we passed Shibuki a wonderfully colourful and alive dress shop full of exquisite one-off fashion pieces. Very good pricing and worth wandering around with no pressure to buy although it is hard not to do so.
